Eco-Tipping Points
Nowadays, environmental issues keep rising up. People don’t realize that they are now taking risk and challenging their future life. They keep destructing and ruin our environment. Just for example, people in Malaysia are not alert on global environmental issues. They don’t have much awareness on recycling and they are seldom participating in environmental protection program.
Outside stimulation and facilitation
I was inspired by The Nature Conservancy since they could retrofit the old building and was certified by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. They took initiative to replace all the air-conditioning system and have installed solar photovoltaic system on the roof.
Malaysia doesn’t pay a lot of effort in constructing Photovoltaic System. Photovoltaic system is such a good concept and they not even save energy, yet they can produce energy and even can sell back to the National Grid.
Letting nature do the work
Sunlight is free! Sunlight is a natural and renewable energy source and we should fully utilize it. What we have to do is just install the PV system and let it function by absorbing solar heat from sunlight.
Strong local institutions and enduring commitment of local leadership
State Government is probably the decision maker in photovoltaic system. Tax incentive should be introduced by government to encourage installation of PV system. I believe that Malaysia can implement this in few more years later. But the first thing comes to mind is education. The biggest problem is education since they don’t have much awareness regarding these issues. What I want to implement is the change in education system. We should educate the public and introduce tax incentive policy to them. By this policy, public will more accept PV system more easily.
A powerful symbol
If the state can implement PV system successfully in whole area, Penang will be a pioneer in implementing PV system in other states. This is a powerful symbol to convince other states in Malaysia to implement PV system for mandatory.
Overcoming social obstacles
People in Malaysia are not aware on environmental issues. Cost of installation of PV system is high and this becomes biggest obstacle since not all people afford to pay it. By education and tax incentives system, we can encourage more and more people to install PV system.
Rapid results
Even though changes in policy may takes a long time, but I can see that solar power system is one of the potential renewable energy in Malaysia. Within 10 years, I strongly believe that it can be implemented in Malaysia.
Besides that, I probably will partner with EcoKnights and held a series of education awareness program. Besides that, I wish to partner with some kindergarten in my hometown and start a small pilot project in that particular kindergarten. After one or two year, I will try to spread to others school in order to educate all small kid or teenager to be the part of “Earth Warrior”.
